312 bottles remaining. Total cask acquisition at current yield: ~£1.25M. Delivery order issued immediately upon sale.
Justerini & Brooks currently list Port Ellen Gemini (44 Year Old, 1978) as a benchmark. No commercial release of Port Ellen at this age statement is available to buy today.
The only 44-year-old Port Ellen release to date is the Port Ellen Gemini — two bottles from twin casks, priced at £45,000 for the pair.
This cask offers 312 bottles of the same age statement. The arithmetic speaks for itself.
Post-Acquisition
Four Paths Forward
At 54.96% ABV and 316L bulk, this cask has the reserves to mature comfortably to age 50. Each strategy below reflects a different commercial vision for the same extraordinary asset.
Buy & Hold
Hold and mature to age 50. The fine and rare Scotch whisky market is in early recovery — with Port Ellen now the #1 auction index performer, marquee casks like this will lead demand as confidence returns. The longer you hold, the fewer competitors exist.
Progressive Bottling (44–50)
Release batches annually from age 44 to 50 — simple, elegant bottlings in the tradition of Port Ellen's annual releases from 2001–2017. Each release generates immediate cash flow while the remaining whisky continues maturing and appreciating.
Port Ellen 50 — Golden Jubilee
A Port Ellen 50-year-old has never been released. Re-rack into a second Pedro Ximénez and a third Mizunara sherry cask to create a Port Ellen 50 duo or trilogy — each expression from a different sherry wood. A singular moment in whisky history, of the kind that defines collections and commands prices with no ceiling.
Re-Racking & Finishing
Each strategy above is enhanced by re-racking or finishing in complementary sherry casks — PX, Mizunara or beyond. This injects variety into taste profile and narrative, adding commercial depth and collector appeal across subsequent bottlings.
The Distillery
Port Ellen, Islay
Founded in 1825 on the southern shore of Islay, Port Ellen became one of Scotland's most celebrated malt whisky distilleries — renowned for its intensely peated spirit, coastal character and extraordinary complexity of depth.
In 1983, Diageo mothballed the distillery during the whisky loch era. No new spirit has been produced since. What remains is a finite number of ageing casks — considered among the most coveted whisky in existence. Every annual release sells out immediately; secondary market prices continue to set records.
The cask offered here — filled on 29th September 1982, just months before the distillery closed — is among the final generation of Port Ellen spirit ever laid down.
