Market Context
Aged Ben Nevis is sought after, and supply is thin.
Seven current UK retail listings of Ben Nevis 1996 and 1998, aged 26 to 29 years, range from £275 to £350 per bottle. Most are hogsheads; a sherry butt of this age would normally sit at the upper end of that range.

The Opportunity
A trophy cask, owned outright.
Approximately 328 bottles at cask strength, with storage and insurance included: owned outright. Delivery order issued on completion of sale.
Current UK listings run from £275 to £350, including Thompson Bros, Royal Mile Whiskies and Master of Malt.
At the average comparable price, the indicative retail shelf value of this cask is £105,700, duty and VAT paid, before bottling and retail costs.
That figure is market context from Rare Whisky 101, not a valuation. A 30 year old sherry butt from Ben Nevis's highly regarded mid-90s distillation, held by the distillery itself, is rarely offered privately.
Post-Acquisition
Four Paths Forward
At 47.4% ABV and 230L bulk, this cask has room to keep maturing while staying comfortably above the 40% minimum for Scotch whisky. Each path below reflects a different plan for the same asset.
Buy & Hold
Hold and mature towards 35 years. Ben Nevis of this age is scarce, and every year in wood reduces the number of comparable casks still in existence.
Single Cask Bottling at 30
Bottle now as a 30 year old, cask strength single cask of around 328 bottles, under your own label or as a private release for collectors.
Progressive Release
Release in batches over several years, generating cash flow from each bottling while the remaining whisky continues to mature.
Re-Racking & Finishing
Any of the routes above can be enhanced by re-racking or finishing in a complementary cask, adding variety, narrative and collector appeal to later bottlings.
The Distillery
Ben Nevis, Fort William
Founded in 1825 at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries, drawing its water from the Allt a' Mhuilinn, which rises in two pools high on the mountain. "Long John" Macdonald, the 6ft 4in local legend, joined the business in 1830, took full control in 1831 and built the whisky's name across Britain. His son Donald later launched "Long John's Dew of Ben Nevis", an early single malt in an age of blends.
After a long run of owners and closures, including Canadian distiller Joseph Hobbs, the distillery was bought by Japan's Nikka Whisky in 1989. Nikka relaunched Ben Nevis as a single malt, and its full-bodied, fruity spirit has built a devoted following among collectors, not least in France.
The cask offered here was filled on 19th April 1996 and is held in the distillery's own warehouse. Rare Whisky 101 has verified its existence, location and strength against the distillery's own stock record.
